A Local Heritage List is a formal process developed by Historic England to allow community groups, local authorities and other interested groups to identify local heritage assets that may not have been deemed sufficiently important to be added to the National Heritage List for England.
Among the purposes of a Local Heritage List are:
- To raise awareness of an area’s local heritage assets and their importance to local distinctiveness.
- To record the nature of the local historic environment more accurately.
The development of Eastbourne has left many (sometimes small and overlooked) pieces of historic evidence. It is important that these should be recorded before they are lost.

Many of the remaining vent pipes have been cut down in height, sometimes with just a base part remaining. The need for these large vent pipes along the routes of sewers was gradually superseded by having individual ‘soil vent pipes’ on each building. |

EHL109 | Entrance to 9, Ocklynge Avenue | Brick, stone, wood and rendered entrance way | 9, Ocklynge Avenue, BN21 2QD | still.alert.intro | Domestic | Building feature | late 1800s | Ocklynge Avenue is built facing one of the original footways of Eastbourne one known as Sparrows Lane. Vehiclular access has always been via Hurst Lane. In 1913 the council resurfaced the track and billed Percy Hurset £47.13s for the work. He would not pay and was sued by the corporation. During the subsequent court case, a lot of interesting historic information emerged as old residents gave evidence about their use of the path. The court decision was that the path had been in use by the public since 1836 but the cost of repair fell on the owner. He appealed, first to Lewes Assizes and finally at the High Court in London. On each occasion he lost his appeal and had to pay costs. |
EHL110 | Boundary Gate between Gildredge Park and Manor Gardens | Two cast iron metal gateposts with nearby metal boundary fence | Between Gildredge Park and Manor Gardens BN20 8BB | fruit.sharp.grape | Domestic | Gate | late 1800s | Lushington’s son sold it in 1792 to Charles Gilbert. Gildredge Park was formerly farmland owned by the Gilbert family. In 1883 the fields and pasture comprising Gildredge Park were within an area of rapid development. To preserve this land as an open space for recreation the town council approached then known as Davies- Gilbert family with offers to purchase the land. They were reluctant to come to an agreement but in 1886 part of the land was leased to the council for fifty years at £1 per annum. In 1908 the council were subsequently able to purchase some fifteen acres for £20.000. The Manor Gardens and the house were purchased in 1923, with the proceeds of a legacy given by Alderman J. C. Towner. The house was converted into an art gallery and named after the benefactor. It is interesting to realise that the park and gardens, were formerly known as Elphick’s field and South field, having a history of cultivation dating back over some 2,000 years. |
EHL111 | Boundary Marker in Manor Gardens | Marble stone marked “THE LAND 4FEET SOUTH OF THIS STONE BELONGS TO DD” | Manor Gardens, BN20 8BB | brush.chew.shots | Civic | Plaque | There is nothing to suggest, either in the style, form or spelling of words, that the boundary stone is contemporary with Gildredge Manor. – a Grade II listed building built in 1776 Quite why a boundary stone denoting a land boundary for the Duke of Devonshire [if that is who DD ‘is’] should be placed here is therefore a mystery. The stone states that 4 feet from it the land belongs to the DD. This suggests the Dukes of Devonshire but this seems erroneous. The stones present location [2023] would place the ‘4 feet’ still within the curtilage of Gildredge Manor. The marker is to far from the public highway for the highway to be of significance. It is also too far from the property boundaries of the Goffs [which in any event are freehold] for the titles of these properties to bring influence to bare on the ‘4 feet’ referenced. Gildredge Manor was purchased by the Gilbert family in 1792 from the Gildredge family. The Gilbert family owned the Manor, pasture and fields now [2023] known as Gildredge Park for some considerable time prior to their purchase by Eastbourne Borough Council 1908. In all of this there is no apparent connection to the Dukes of Devonshire | |
